Pogonip

It’s a chill that permeates to the bone. Not simply cold, but, for lack of a better word, a frosty cold. Combine below freezing temperatures with humidity and you get the frozen fog sometimes known as “pogonip.” Adapted from the word for cloud in the language of the Shoshone tribe, it refers to a dense fog that crystallizes onto surfaces, and sometimes in the air. It can settle into mountain valleys for days at a time, as it did recently in the Klamath Basin. Several of those days I went skiing in glorious sunshine above the fog, but I also took the opportunity to get out in the wintery wonderland with my camera. Below are some of the images I made - I hope you enjoy them in the cozy warmth of your home!
